  • Jimmy Savile situation causing stir, could this add too our stigma

I am a little worried about all this hysteria about Jimmy Savile.

It's all over the media that Jimmy Savile was arrested and let go because there was no evidence or something.

However, how many people are arrested and let go for false allegations? Well myself to be one and hundreds of others on here.

If Jimmy Savile is guilty then he is terrible and got away with so many bad things, I just don't want to be classed as the same as him when I haven't done anything wrong.

Think I am just on a downer. This Jimmy Savile business is making falsly accused people look bad. He can't fix this one.

    Front page news today:

    "Jimmy Savile touched my arm"

    FRONT PAGE NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Next week it'll be:

    "Jimmy Savile TALKED to me"............

I believe the media are starting to take the story too far and before long Jimmy will be forgotten as 'that dead pervert' which will do a major injustice to the real and genuine people who have been damaged by whatever behaviour he had towards them. In the long term the stories may even cause damage to similar victims who wish to make accusations even though they are genuinely being honest.

All it takes is for the Police to mess up and put the news out there that 'some' of the accusations have been found to be false and suddenly everyone will be tarnished with the same brush... Jimmy Savile has not been convicted of any crimes so far yet there are apparently 900 victims! How he would now be convicted of any crimes is also a little unclear let alone what the point of convicting dead people would be...

I understand where you are coming from and maybe a positive to result from the Savile stuff will be that the Police will be forced to either follow the law, Guilty or Not Guilty, rather the present 'speculative' method where nobody ever knows anything for sure as 'no further action' has been taken or changes in the entire process will need to be implemented. There could be an opportunity for change here somewhere...
    Wow... A signature option!

When Savile got arrested do you think he would have just said no comment or given a full story?

I just feel at the moment there is a potential licence brewing for scorn women and men to make up stories on the back of this to get back at men they don't like.

        @Jamie

I don't remember Jimmy Savile being arrested by the police regarding his "behaviour".

I am aware that he has been asked about it by Louis Theroux and of course he denied being a peadophile.
        Non,je ne regrette rien.

He got arrested twice, 2008 and 2009 I think.

I asked that nice Mr Google about Savile being arrested for child sex offences between 2006 and 2009 and there seems to be nothing. Maybe you are confusing mentions of his behaviour (such as Louise Theroux and others) with arrest.

I think he was questioned but not arrested?

              From BBC Timeline -
In 2007, Surrey police question Savile over allegations of child sex abuse in the 1970s. The matter is referred to the CPS, which advises there is insufficient evidence to take further action. In 2008, Sussex police receive an allegation of sexual assault against Savile which allegedly took place in Worthing in 1970 but it is dropped as the complainant is "unwilling to co-operate". Savile is also named during a 2008 police investigation into abuse at Haut de Garenne children's home in Jersey

If it were passed to the CPS, would there not have to be an arrest first?

Mr Wiki - he say 'yes'

During his lifetimeDuring Savile's lifetime, sporadic allegations of child abuse were made against him, but only became widely publicised after his death. Savile claimed the key to his success on Jim'll Fix It had been that he disliked children, although he later admitted to saying this to deflect scrutiny of his personal life. He did not own a computer as he did not want anybody to think he was downloading child pornography.[91]
In a 1990 interview for The Independent on Sunday, Lynn Barber asked him about rumours that he liked "little girls". Savile's reply was that, as he worked in the pop music business, "...the young girls in question don't gather round me because of me – it's because I know the people they love, the stars... I am of no interest to them."[92] In April 2000, in a documentary by Louis Theroux, When Louis Met Jimmy Savile, Savile acknowledged "salacious tabloid people" had raised rumours about whether he was a paedophile, and said, "I know I'm not."[93]
In 2007, Savile was interviewed under caution by police investigating an allegation of indecent assault in the 1970s at the now-closed Duncroft Approved School for Girls near Staines, Surrey, where he was a regular visitor. The Crown Prosecution Service advised there was insufficient evidence to take any further action and no charges were brought.[94] In March 2008, Savile started legal proceedings against The Sun newspaper which had linked him in several articles to child abuse at the Jersey children's home Haut de la Garenne.[95] Savile denied visiting Haut de la Garenne, but later admitted that he had following the publication of a photograph showing him at the home surrounded by children.[51] The States of Jersey Police said that in 2008 an allegation of an indecent assault by Savile at the home in the 1970s had been investigated, but there had been insufficient evidence to proceed.[96] In 2009, Savile publicly defended the convicted paedophile pop star Gary Glitter, saying, "he just watched a few 'dodgy films' and was only vilified because he was a celebrity... It were for his own gratification. Whether it was right or wrong is up to him as a person. But they didn't do anything wrong."[97]
In 2012, Sir Roger Jones, former BBC governor for Wales and chairman of BBC charity Children in Need, disclosed that more than a decade before Savile's death he had banned Savile from involvement in the charity, because he felt Savile's behaviour was "strange" and "suspicious", and had heard unsubstantiated rumours about his activities.[98] Former Royal Family press secretary Dickie Arbiter said Savile's behaviour had raised "concern and suspicion" when Savile acted as an informal marriage counsellor between Prince Charles and Princess Diana in the late 1980s, although no reports had been made.[60]
And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the world. Then made the world round .... and laughed and laughed and laughed ..

Many thanks for the clarification. Story can be found on the above link - scroll down to 2000 Investigations.

Like Faith, I would have thought he would have been arrested for it to have been sent to the CPS. Maybe another hush job.......

Thank you to RFLH for her Mr Wiki say yes post! Nice one! So denied ever being at the home in Jersey until a photograph popped up showing him there. Rather like Freddy Starr who claimed not to have met a certain young woman and suddenly up pops a photo of them together in a group pic.....

I'm wondering though whether it was actually publicised in the media though, I can't see anything from the material time, but possibly it was hushed up (granted anonymity) due to who he was....... that doesn't mean there is nothing in the media from that time though - just that I've never seen it.

The Sun carried a story in 2008 about JS being linked to Haut de la Garenne and had photo's of him there even though he denied ever being there.
He slapped an injunction on them and they withdrew the photo's and he started libel procedures against them.

I read an article tonight on-line that made me stop and think, I won't link it but it it said that - we have something akin to the Salem Witch Trials, mass hysteria orchestrated by the gutter press.

His estate is being sought after. I rest my case. The guy is dead and can't speak for himself, this has always perturbed me a little, but when I found out that there were going to be claims for compensation I shut off. I dont know what it is about me but I have experienced every damn side to this horrific crime. I saw my friend being abused in front of me when I was seven years old by a neighbour in the seventies and if I hadn't ran out he would have got me too. I have lived with that for years, the guilt of leaving her etc etc. (He still lives next door but one to my Mum by the way) I would be appalled if my friend came forward now and said can we go to court. I know that sounds awful but what is the gain? It happened. So all this historical rubbish to me is a lot of the time linked to money. Shoot me for that controversial slant but you try googling compensation for rape and then come back to me.

As a child from the seventies, I would not dream of resurrecting what happened. If my friend asked me now to stand for her, to be honest, I dont know what I would do. He should have been arrested years ago, well when I was nine years old. (Yes we kept it quiet that long, 2 years for a child is a long time)
It was only when an older child, well I told her, and she told and it all went pear shaped. The police were not interested. I was made to tell a police woman what he did to my friend. I could never have made that up at nine years old but nothing was done. The guy is in his seventies now and hopefully close to death. Let him answer to God, but I really cannot believe Jimmy Saville abused that many people. Also, what are the chances of 100 people keeping quiet for 30 years let alone 300 and as the news always says: 'The alleged victims who have suffered at the hands of Jimmy Saville has now risen to 300'

                        *shakes head*

300 hundred plus people kept quiet this long. What did he do, threaten them with the SAS?

Looking on the bright side from my point of view, if any of the Savile/ MP/ Freddie Starr et al accusers are found to be lying and they were involved in any other cases where the defendant was convicted it may well assist an appeal against conviction...
