  • What to do next????

    Hi,

I hope I am in the right place for posting this, but if not I am sorry.

This Wednesday represented the end of 18 months of hell for me. I had been charged falsely with a sexual assault charge of one of my employees, I was arrested at work, bailed, charged and I opted for Crown Court, my trial was scheduled for December and then postponed at the 11th hour by the prosecution, and this week my defence were informed that they were offering no evidence at trial, so on Wednesday in court (the official trial start day) the judge found me not guilty.

This accusation has shattered my life in part, and has taken some rebuilding, I am now getting a divorce, and my career has been on hold. At the end of it all I am just grateful that it is over and I want to get on with my life, I have no interest in picking fights with my accusers and taking civil legal action, but I am over £5000 in debt due to my legal aid contributions, how on earth if possible do I go about getting this money back, my Credit Card company I know would breathe a huge sigh of relief.

    Hope you can help

You should be able to claim that back

    Extract:

    "Claiming Your Costs After Acquittal.
In fact, if you are acquitted your advocate can ask the court to make an application for your costs to be reimbursed ‘out of central funds’. These costs must be reasonable and cover for example the cost of your journeys to and from court on each occasion. Your legal representative should take details of these costs from you in order to be able to present an accurate figure to the court".
