    OK so on what grounds did Lord Brittian et al get the payment from the police

    Does that mean any of use falsely accused can sue the police and how?

    I believe it was for damage done to his property after he'd somehow got them to accept that the search was unjustified.. Interestingly the settlement included a gagging clauses meaning he can't speak out any more about what's happened. In other words, it looks like they've paid him to shut up- perhaps they're afraid what can of worms he'll open if he speaks out anymore. This strikes me as a damage limitation exercise by the police in response to a very high profile case
