  • Urgent help and advice please!

Hi everyone, I'll try to get straight to the point and hopefully someone can help me out.

I've been asked to attend the police station tomorrow to be charged. I urgently need to details of a good solicitor in the North West. I'm aware of Chris Saltrese through reading these forums but expect that the services of his practice will be too expensive for me. I'm doubtful I'll qualify for legal aid and whilst I'm not trying to cut corners I ultimately cannot afford the best of the best.

A good friend of mine has an Uncle who works as a Barrister at St. John's Buildings in Manchester. He has recommended a solicitor at Platt Halpern also in Manchester however I do not know if they are most suitable.

To summarise my situation, I attend a voluntary interview with the police in January and employed the services of Mary Monson Solicitors to assist...I wish I hadn't! Essentially I had a drunken one night stand with a junior work colleague at a Christmas party. I'm a married man and she has a boyfriend and in the morning we were both very regretful about what had happened. We had a fairly lengthy chat in the morning about the night before and part way through she suddenly started to say she couldn't remember anything and asking how I had got in her room!?! The whole experience was so surreal. It was as though the whole thing had been pre-planned.

We spoke a couple of times on the phone later that morning and she stated on a number of occasions that she didn't want anyone to find out. She promptly goes home and apparently tells her boyfriend and mother that she awoke to find me in her hotel room with no recollection of anything of the night. Fast forward a few days and I'm suspended from work, sacked a few weeks later and then subsequently interviewed by the police.

As far as I am aware she has told the police she was too drunk to consent to anything and I have somehow let myself in her hotel room and raped her. This is essentially what she has told work but can't remember anything. CCTV from hotel shows her letting me in her room but in my ex employers opinion 'on the balance of probability' she was too drunk to consent and they sacked me. This is despite the fact she had asked me back to her room a number of times and literally pounced on me when she let me in the room. They have ignored everything I have told them and sided with her despite me being the only one who can give a clear indication of what happened in the bedroom.

There is a lot more to the above and I'll go into more detail in a future post but right now I desperately need a good solicitor and barrister.

    Many Thanks

I am so sorry to see, yet again, somebody who has had a bad experiences with Monson solicitors.

Have you actually spoken with Chris Saltrese? It might not be as expensive you may think and you can pay in installments.. At least give him a ring

As you seem to have lost your job it could be that you are eligible for legal aid.

      Welcome to the forum B16JMO.

I'm sorry you find yourself here in what is a very familiar situation.

I send you straight to the useful information section.

      http://www.daftmoo.org.uk/mooforum/f...ul-Information

The top two threads are all of the sols and barristers recommended by daftmoo members, the google map is based on the thread.

Hopefully Rights Fighter will be along soon, she keeps a database of good LA sols in her brain. Edit.... and she beat me to it!

You will qualify for LA if you have less than 37,500 disposable income after mortgage 9k living allowance ... Or a joint income of less than 100,000 but you may have to pay contributions.. LA is very complicated and no one here understands it

        Thanks Rights Fighter.

I did try to contact Chris just after Christmas for advice but ended up with Mary Monson only because they were the quickest to respond. I paid them privately for the police station stage and have been less than impressed with their performance to say the least.

Will give CS a call tomorrow for a chat. Have you heard anything positive about Platt Halpern? My friends Barrister Uncle is Paul Smith who recommended Naila Akhter who is a partner there.

With respect to Legal Aid, I have inexplicably lost my job but I'm currently working freelance and also married so expect I won't qualify.
With saying that...i haven't had the courage to tell my wife about it all yet which I'm clearly going to have to now I'm about to be charged. I should have been honest with her 7 or 8 months ago but I've buried my head in the sand hoping it would go away. I just don't know where to start. Our marriage will be over the minute I tell her...

          Thanks Peter, much appreciated.

I may well be eligible for LA then if that's the case. I did spend a bit of time looking into it but admit it did seem overly complicated!

Sometimes it is better to ring Chris rather than email. Monsons are quick to respond because they want the custom. I have yet to hear something good about them.

Call Chris tomorrow. If he's out of the office you will speak with his PA or trainee - both lovely people who should be able to help you.

Explain that you have been talking to Rights Fighter on Daftmoo. They will know who you mean.

Thanks RF, will call first thing.

Whilst I wound prefer to go down the Private Client route, if it proves too prohibitive can you advise of a good Legal Aid solicitor in the North West?

Thanks RF. Will drop him a line.

What about Corenna Platt of Stephensons Solicitors? Have seen her name mentioned a couple of times in older posts.
