This is a very interesting article and it is right that it should be posted here. That said, it is also I believe quite misleading.

The insinuation is that Detective Chief Inspector Paul Settle, has somehow been vilified / fit up, because of a political agenda but looking at the facts I am not sure that is at all true.

It seems to me that as Settle is such a senior and vastly experienced copper, routinely investigation murder and other inquiries, rather than approaching the matter as a specialist from a rape investigation team would - i.e. that the complainant has to be right, he has (quite correctly in my view) against common practice, considered the evidence from the complainant.

Having established that the evidence from the complainant does not fit the facts, he has then proceeded to have the case dropped. Whilst on here we appreciate that this is how it should be, I think a lot of people on here will agree it is not how it is.

Whilst this article is positive in terms of generating awareness around the issue, it is also negative in so much as it insinuates that the reason for the marginalization of DCI Settle is politically motivated rather than symptomatic of way in which these alleged offences are investigated.

Clearly the Met made a mistake here, thinking it clever to put a senior detective on it, when in fact what they needed was someone from the rape squad who know how to do what they're told, not necessarily what is right.
