  • What does NFA mean?!

I have been asked via private message what NFA means.

I thought it better to answer here so that others who do not know, can learn.

NFA = No further Action. So there is no charge (ie it will not go to trial).

When a complaint is NFA'd (No Further Actioned) the complainant can ask for a review of that decision.

This is unlikely to happen unless there is fresh evidence to resurrect the NFA.

I have seen NFAs resurrected years after they occurred, for instance, when a different member of the same family made allegations against the same person.

In the case of a one night stand, for example, the matter could be NFAd (due to insufficient evidence) but if another person goes to the police naming the same person, and circumstances are similar, then they may well decide to resurrect that NFA.

NFA does not mean that the person's name is cleared. It means that there is insufficient evidence to proceed.

On rare occasions, when evidence shows the complainant to be lying, then he or she might end up being prosecuted for PCJ - Perverting the Course of Justice or Wasting Police Time.
