As has been asked, what does counsel think of the chances of appealing the conviction?

Your son is entitled to a document called an "Advice on Appeal". This sets out the background of the case, and also reasons why (or why not) counsel thinks there are grounds for appealing the conviction.

If he is convicted of having sexual intercourse with the girl, what did the medical evidence suggest? If it was "inconclusive" then the judge has to direct the jury in a certain way. If he misdirects the jury on that point (and on other points) then that can be a ground with which to appeal.

Thanks to CH for editing the post to put into small paragraphs. I cannot read huge blocks of text so if Mikeg responds to me, please make sure you follow suit.
