  • Defendants not named until trial started

A high-profile trial relating to child abuse has just commenced in my local CC.

What is interesting is that the defendants were only permitted to be named (and photographed) by the media as the first day of proceedings commenced.

I'm wondering if this stipulation was specific to this particular case or if it is a welcome new trend for cases involving sexual allegations.

The defendants can only be named after reporting restrictions, imposed nine months ago, were lifted following an application by the BBC and the Press Association.
    The trial continues.
